‘Momentum in AACtion’ in June

Starting June 20, we will hold our Momentum in AACtion workshop. Our goal is to enhance communication skills in children who utilize Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) by increasing their access and social language skills.

We’ve set out to educate graduate students, staff, and community volunteers in an effort to better prepare them as strong AAC partners. We strive to facilitate children’s peer interactions and expand their language within the program environment, the ultimate goal being increased language for the child within their home and community. We feel all children have the ability and right to communicate, and our work supports these goals.

There are two-week sessions available for families. You can learn more.

We also want to shout out our incredible team of speech therapists who help kids every day. You can learn more about the photo on the left by clicking here.

Policy & Advocacy Newsletter: Your Voice is Needed
Our monthly Policy & Advocacy Newsletter went out this week. If you missed it, you can read it in its entirety here.

As noted earlier by Momentum’s President & CEO Lori Anderson, the next two weeks will be critical for disability services funding. During this time, the California Legislature is hammering out the budget and working with the Governor’s office to pass the FY2022-23 state budget. We ask that you take a moment to contact your elected representatives to ask them to pass a budget that reflects the values and priorities of California by ensuring people with disabilities have access to equal opportunities. Please act today by visiting Momentum’s Voter Voice site by clicking here.

Upcoming Movie Premiere: The Anxiety of Laughing

The Anxiety of Laughing is a film about a comedian who finds himself the caregiver for his once abled-bodied fiancé, but after a car crash is now paralyzed. This film has been selected to premiere at the Dances with Films Festival on June 14.

The premiere is being held at the TCL Chinese Theatres in West Hollywood. Tickets are on pre-sale now. “Having The Anxiety of Laughing be screened at this event is not just a great achievement for the film, but for this effort to have more disability representation in the media,” said Andrew Justvig, who writes, directs, and stars in the full-length feature film.
