June 20, 2023

We hope everyone had a wonderful Father’s Day and Juneteenth celebration. This summer, we’re expanding our horizons and outreach. Thank you to everyone who has supported our artists, as well as the people who utilize our programs. In this edition of Momentum’s ICYMI, you’ll see Momentum Creative artists and their artwork on display in Los Angeles. Plus we’re gathering sponsors for our big summer events including the Devon Stern Golf Tournament and Camp Escapades. Those sponsorships directly support the people we support. Read on to learn more of how you can help children and adults with disabilities and medical conditions.

Refresh Offers Services to Impacted Writers on Front Lines

Momentum announced its support of the Writer Guild West’s (WGAW) Disability Committee through the donation of its new Refresh vehicle this week. The vehicle provided writers with disabilities the necessary reasonable accommodations at the picket line in front of Sony Studios in Culver City. The afternoon proved the importance of reasonable accommodations through Universal Design. Refresh should also be heavily considered for use in the entertainment industry to ensure everyone receives equal access.

Artists Debut Artwork at New Los Angeles Exhibit

Cheers to Momentum Creative as several artists had their pieces accepted into a new exhibit in Culver City. Moving Together is an art exhibit at the Helms Bakery District that explores various interpretations of “movement” through art created by artists in Los Angeles County. We’re grateful to L.A. GOAL for the invitation to this important event. Jack, Anthony, Janet, Daniel, and Scotty had their beautiful artwork on display. Several of the pieces sold! “The exhibit is a celebration of the power of art to unite people from different backgrounds and abilities,” said Petite Konstantin, Executive Director of L.A. GOAL.

Momentum Welcomes Product Design Class for Day of Learning

The wonderful students of ArtCenter College of Design had a different kind of learning experience when they trooped down to our Torrance clinic last week. The Product Design class of Professor Jini Zopf observed some of the children we support in our Leaps and Bounds and Early Head Start classes, looking out for ideas and insights that can help them design products under the theme “Play for Communication.”

The students also learned about some of the challenges that children with disabilities and medical conditions deal with everyday, from maintaining balance while playing to effectively communicating what they need or want. For these ArtCenter students, the experience served not just as an eye-opener to how different people’s realities are, but also as an inspiration to design products that promote inclusion and accessibility.

Thank you, Jini and to your promising product design class, for visiting Momentum! We look forward to the designs you’ll be creating.
