Our beloved occupational therapists have a variety of specialized skills to help the children who come through our doors. Did you know feeding is a skill that OTs teach?
We may not think much about feeding or eating as a skill. That might be because it’s a nourishing activity that we feel comes naturally. But feeding, like any other skill, needs to be learned too. In fact, feeding requires several other skills such as posture control, hand-eye coordination, balance, and fine motor skills (like properly grasping and holding a spoon) for it to be done properly.
Aside from teaching a child these skills needed for feeding, OTs also help create optimal conditions that teach a child how to eat better and have a healthy relationship with food.
Did you also know that it’s not only children whom OTs help with feeding? OTs can also work with adults with disabilities or mobility limitations to help them gain or regain independence in daily activities like feeding. Thank you, our mighty OTs, for the amazing work that you do. Want to send a note of encouragement? Email us here.
